Beowulf Supercomputing

In 1999 we built a 40 processor Beowulf Linux cluster with funds provided by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The cluster consists of 20 dual--processor Intel Pentium 300 500MHZ boxes. They are linked over 100baseT switched fast ethernet and firewalled by a VALinux Quad Xeon 700 MHZ firewall. The cluster's 40 compute nodes are capable of approximately 9 Gigaflops and contain a total of 0.4 terabytes of storage. Each node is equipped with 256 MB of RAM and stores a local copy of the Linux operating system. /home and /usr/local are shared over NFS, password information is shared via NIS.
